RSI Explained
The Relative Strength Index measures momentum. How to read overbought/oversold zones, spot divergence, and avoid the traps most retail traders fall into.
🎓 Master Momentum Confluence Inside PAN Elite📈 Overbought
RSI above 70 — momentum stretched to the upside
📉 Oversold
RSI below 30 — momentum stretched to the downside
🔀 Divergence
Price and RSI disagree — momentum fading first
⚙️ Default Period
Wilder's original smoothing period
RSI Zones at a Glance
| Zone | RSI Range | What It Means | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extreme Overbought | 80 - 100 | Very strong buying momentum | Strong trends can stay overbought for a long time |
| Overbought | 70 - 80 | Momentum favours buyers | Not an automatic sell signal on its own |
| Neutral | 40 - 60 | Balanced momentum, often ranging price | Least reliable zone for signals |
| Oversold | 20 - 30 | Momentum favours sellers | Not an automatic buy signal on its own |
| Extreme Oversold | 0 - 20 | Very strong selling momentum | Strong downtrends can stay oversold for a long time |
🔀 Reading RSI Divergence
Bullish Divergence
What Happens:
• Price makes a lower low
• RSI makes a higher low
Tell-Tale Signs:
• Weakening downside momentum into the new low
• Often forms near existing demand zones
What to Do:
• Wait for a break of the last minor swing high to confirm
Bearish Divergence
Price makes a higher high, RSI makes a lower high
Often disguised inside a strong-looking uptrend
Watch for it forming into a supply zone or key resistance
Confluence sharply increases reliability
Confirm with a break of structure the other way
Don't front-run divergence without confirmation
👣 RSI Signals to Watch
Failure Swings
What it looks like: RSI fails to exceed its prior high/low despite price doing so
Why it happens: Underlying momentum is running out before price catches on
What follows: Often precedes a short-term reversal
One of Wilder's original RSI signals, still valid today
Centerline Cross
What it looks like: RSI crossing above or below the 50 level
Why it happens: Marks the shift between bullish and bearish momentum control
What follows: Often used to confirm trend direction, not time entries alone
Best used as a filter alongside structure, not a standalone trigger
RSI Trendline Break
What it looks like: A trendline drawn on RSI itself gets broken
Why it happens: Momentum shifts often show up on the oscillator before price
What follows: An early heads-up that price structure may break next
Leading signal — always wait for price confirmation
⚠️ Common RSI Mistakes
What Works
Using RSI as confluence:
Combine with supply/demand zones or structure, not in isolation
Divergence with confirmation:
Wait for a structural break before acting on divergence
Matching RSI to trend context:
Treat overbought/oversold differently in trends vs ranges
What Doesn't Work
Selling every overbought reading:
Strong trends routinely hold overbought/oversold for extended periods
Trading RSI alone:
No price or structure context leads to overtrading noisy signals
⚖️ How to Trade RSI With Confluence
📦 Zone + RSI
Approach: Look for oversold RSI reaching into a demand zone
Avoid: Buying oversold in the middle of a range
Confirmation: Bullish reaction candle at the zone
🔀 Divergence + Structure
Approach: Trade divergence only after a break of structure
Stop: Beyond the divergence swing point
Confirmation: Momentum shift on the centerline
🔄 Range Rejections
Approach: Fade RSI extremes only inside clear ranges
Avoid: Fading extremes in a strong trending market
Confirmation: Rejection at range high/low
📐 Trend Filter
Approach: Only take longs when RSI holds above 50 in an uptrend
Avoid: Counter-trend entries against a strong centerline bias
Confirmation: Higher timeframe trend alignment
📋 Quick RSI-Reading Guide
RSI above 70 in a strong uptrend
📈 Not a sell signal alone — check structure first.
Price makes a new low, RSI doesn't
🔀 Bullish divergence — wait for confirmation.
